The Cite de Carcassonne was the most important Cathar stronghold in the 12th and 13th centuries. It has been renovated to a high (if, some would argue, unrealistic) standard. Wandering through the streets can really bring you a feeling of the place (Read The Labyrinth while there) as it was. There are dozens of eateries, many offering excellent value fixed price menus, tourist shops galore and some interesting activities. The daily jousting tournament is fun for older children (the very young or easily frightened might find it a bit too realistic) and during July do try to book tickets for one of the the outdoor concerts held every evening in the Cite.
